About Islam
Islam is one of the
major world religions. Every fifth person on this earth is a Muslim. Muslims
are found in the Middle East, in north, west and east Africa, in Asia and
Eastern Europe. In modern times, Muslims are found in large numbers in
Western Europe, the Americas and Australia through immigration as well as
conversion....
Islam is not just a religion in the conventional sense of
the word; it is a way of life—it guides its followers in every aspect of
their lives. The name “Islăm” is an Arabic word. It comes from the root word
“as-silm” which means “peace”. “Islăm” itself means “submission to the will
of God”. It means that real peace comes only after a person submits himself
to the will of God.
Although Islam, in the sense of a religion by that
name, started with Prophet Muhammad's preaching fourteen centuries ago in
Arabia, in terms of its message it is not a new beginning . Rather, it is
the culmination of the message of God for human society. Islam states that
from day one of human creation God has sent prophets and messengers to guide
the human society. Many prophets were sent to various regions of the world.
Muslims are required to have faith in the prophethood of all of them. The
most famous of the past prophets were: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and
Jesus.

About Shia ithna
asheri muslims
Of the 1.2 billion muslims in
the world, approximately 15% belong to the Shia school of thought. In a
wider sense, the arabic word ‘shia’ means “followers; members of a
party/group”. For example, it has been used as such in the Holy Qur’an in
verses like 28:15, 37:83. In common usage the word ‘shia’ is an abbreviation
of “Shi’at Ali” – party/followers of Ali Ibn Abu Taleb (a.s.) This term was
already in use during the lifetime of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w)......more
Meaning of “Ithna ’Asheri”: This Arabic word means ‘Twelver’. It
refers to the belief that the true leaders/guides after the Holy Prophet (s.a.w)
are the twelve divinely-appointed successors , the first of whom was Ali Ibn
Abu Taleb (a.s.). As the overwhelming majority of the world’s shia hold this
belief, it is common to simply use the word ‘shia’ to describe them.
Who are ‘Jaafari’ muslims?: This is just another name for the Shia Ithna
’Asheri muslims. It is used in recognition of the fact that the sixth
divinely-appointed successor of the Holy Prophet – Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.s.)
– was instrumental in openly elucidating and establishing shia beliefs, law
and practice. He had the opportunity to do this as the prevailing political
conditions of the time, i.e. the decline of the Ummayyad dynasty and the
establishment of the nascent Abbasid dynasty, created a brief period of
intellectual freedom.

Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (a.s.) was the most learned
man of his time, a magnet drawing lovers of knowledge from all over the
world. His students included Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Malik Ibn Anas,
founders of two important schools of Islamic law, and Jabir Ibn Hayyan, the
prominent muslim scientist.
